About Us

Hazelwood is a community of people who acknowledge both our frailty and God's promise to bring renewal through the gospel.  Hazelwood PC is a place to search out and experience the power of the good news of God's love. and to hear his truth proclaimed.  HPC is  a founding congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America.  We believe the Bible is God's Word and the final authority in all matters of faith and practice.

Steve and Melanie Muzio
Senior Pastor - Steve Muio

Steve and Melanie had vastly different backgrounds.

Steve was born in California to a military couple and moved quite often during his formative years.

Melanie was a born and bred Alabama girl (but Auburn fan) who lived in the state her entire life until going off to college in Mississippi.

Steve’s parents did not attend church or profess to follow Jesus Christ.  Melanie’s family were devoted to the church and its teachings.

In God’s kind mercies Steve came to faith in high school when confronted with questions about eternity.   Melanie attended that same school and there they met and formed a relationship that culminated in marriage.

Steve also went to college in Mississippi to pursue sports and other vocational choices until his relatively new faith led to a belief that God’s Spirit was directing him toward the ministry.  He transferred to the school Melanie was attending, Belhaven College, to get the preparation he had missed out on due to his non-churched upbringing.  He graduated from Belhaven with a BA in Biblical Studies; Melanie graduated with a degree in Counseling, and both graduated while wearing a wedding ring, having tied the knot after their third year of college.

The Muzio’s began life in ministry immediately after college with Steve working as an unordained Director of Youth Ministries at a PCA church in Jackson, Mississippi.   A few years into this ministry Steve began studies at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson Mississippi, working full time in ministry while attending school part time squeezing his three years of seminary into seven!  He graduated from “RTS” in 1992.  A few years later he began work in the Doctor of Ministry program at Covenant Theological Seminary (the denomination’s official seminary) and graduated with a Doctor of Ministry degree in 2002.  The Muzio’s have served congregations in Alabama, Southern California, and Iowa before accepting the call to serve Jesus among the saints at Hazelwood.

The Muzio’s have three grown children, Cole with his family in Newnan, Georgia; Cody with his family in Montgomery, Alabama; and Abbey soon to be wed and living in Rockingham, North Carolina.

Assistant Pastor - Cooper Starnes

Cooper was born and raised in Morganton, NC. After graduating from high school, he earned an
Associate in the Arts degree from Western Piedmont Community College. He then transferred to UNC Chapel Hill, where he met his beautiful wife Hannah. Cooper graduated in 2016 with a
double major in History and Political Science. He enrolled in Reformed Theological Seminary of
Charlotte where he earned a Masters of Divinity in 2020. Cooper and Hannah were married in
December of 2016 and now have a little girl named Alison Reah (Ali Rea), who is now 2.
Cooper and Hannah look forward to many years of ministry at Hazelwood where they can serve
the church and in helping them to know and love the Lord Jesus Christ.
